Tattoo aftercare has undergone a quiet revolution with the introduction of medical-grade adhesive bandages, commonly known by brand names like Saniderm, Tegaderm, or Second Skin. These transparent, waterproof, and breathable films are applied directly to a fresh tattoo, changing the way collectors heal their skin and dramatically reducing the risk of infection.
Second Skin works by locking in the body’s natural healing fluids, specifically plasma, while letting oxygen in and keeping dirt and bacteria out. When your body heals a wound, it produces plasma, which contains proteins and enzymes that accelerate tissue regeneration. The application process is simple. After completing the session, your artist will clean the area, let it dry, and apply the film. Removing Second Skin requires care. Because the adhesive is strong, pulling it off dry can damage your healing skin and pull out ink. The best way to remove it is in a warm shower. Let the warm water run over the bandage to loosen the adhesive, then locate a corner and gently pull the film *along* the skin (stretching it), rather than pulling it straight up.
Once removed, wash the tattoo immediately with mild soap, let it air-dry, and either apply a second sheet of Saniderm for another 3 to 5 days, or transition to a standard lotion.
